چکیده

Enstrophy is an averagedmeasure of fluid vorticity. This quantity is particularly important in rotating geophysical flows. We investigate the dynamical evolution of enstrophy for large-scale quasi-geostrophic flows under random wind forcing. We obtain upper bounds on the enstrophy, as well as results establishing its Hölder continuity and describing the small-time asymptotics.

Ergodicity of Stochastically Forced Large Scale Geophysical Flows

We investigate the ergodicity of 2D large scale quasigeostrophic flows under random wind forcing. We show that the quasigeostrophic flows are ergodic under suitable conditions on the random forcing and on the fluid domain, and under no restrictions on viscosity, Ekman constant or Coriolis parameter. When these conditions are satisfied, then for any observable of the quasigeostrophic flows, its ...

Crude closure for flow with topography through large-scale statistical theory

Crude closure algorithms based on equilibrium statistical theories are developed here for prototypical geophysical flows involving barotropic flow over topography. These algorithms are developed utilizing the simplest energy–enstrophy statistical theory for flow with topography. Only a single parameter, the energy, is tracked by the algorithm and the entire flow structure is predicted through t...

Experimental study of two-dimensional enstrophy cascade

– We study the direct enstrophy cascade in a two-dimensional flow generated in an electromagnetically driven thin layer of fluid. Due to the presence of bottom friction, the energy spectrum deviates from the classical Kraichnan prediction k. We find that the correction to the spectral slope depends on the thickness on the layer, in agreement with a theoretical prediction based on the analogy wi...

Entropy, Closures and Subgrid Modeling

Maximum entropy states or statistical mechanical equilibrium solutions have played an important role in the development of a fundamental understanding of turbulence and its role in geophysical flows. In modern general circulation models of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans most parameterizations of the subgrid-scale energy and enstrophy transfers are based on ad hoc methods or ideas developed f...

Statistically relevant conserved quantities for truncated quasigeostrophic flow.

Systematic applications of ideas from equilibrium statistical mechanics lead to promising strategies for assessing the unresolved scales of motion in many problems in science and engineering. A scientific debate over more than the last 25 years involves which conserved quantities among the formally infinite list are statistically relevant for the large-scale equilibrium statistical behavior. He...
